Lead engineering organization productivity while delivering and reviewing Ruby on Rails web applications. Drive cross-team technical decisions, resolve organizational issues, and lead a functional domain.
This role leads improvements to engineering-organization flow efficiency as the business and organization scale. Working closely with the CTO and VPoE, the person addresses complex organizational issues with teams, operates across organizational boundaries, and leads an assigned functional area. Depending on experience and career direction, the position may focus on technical leadership, engineering management, or a combination of both.
Responsibilities include designing, developing, reviewing, and releasing Ruby on Rails web applications; finding technical issues within and beyond the team; proposing and implementing solutions; responding to inquiries that require specification confirmation or technical investigation; and participating in Scrum events. The role also supports technical decision-making and development-team operation to improve productivity.
The development environment includes Ruby 3.4, Ruby on Rails 8.0, and RSpec for backend work. Frontend technologies include TypeScript, Next.js CSR/SPAs, React Hooks, and SWR. Mobile development uses Swift for iOS and Kotlin for Android. Infrastructure includes AWS services such as ECS Fargate, Aurora, RDS, S3, ElastiCache, and CloudFront; Elasticsearch; selected Google Cloud services; Terraform; and Datadog Logs with S3. The organization also uses GitHub, Slack, Notion, and AI-agent and LLM tools including GitHub Copilot Coding Agent, Devin, Cursor, Claude Code, Vertex AI, LiteLLM, MLflow, Gemini, and NotebookLM.
Required qualifications are one or more of the following: experience operating a development team or contributing to decisions intended to maximize team or organizational results and productivity; at least five years of web product-development experience in backend, frontend, mobile, or another web area; technical-lead experience modernizing or rearchitecting a large-scale web service; or experience leading work from requirements definition through cross-team project delivery. Preferred experience includes Ruby on Rails development and operations, high-load and highly available services, authentication and authorization including OIDC, Agile projects, TypeScript or Next.js frontend work, project management or leadership, developer-experience improvement, data visualization for decision support, and people management, development, or hiring.
The engineering organization works across frontend through SRE layers and allows engineers to participate in user interviews and product discovery. The role may support existing products, new product development, or platform work involving shared capabilities such as identity management, payments, identity verification, and work-record and evaluation data.
Employment is full-time with a three-month probationary period. Annual salary is listed as JPY 12,000,000 to JPY 16,000,000 and includes bonuses paid twice yearly; pay may be revised through twice-yearly evaluations. Full remote work is available. Working hours use a flextime system with core hours of 11:00-15:30 and standard hours of 9:30-18:30. The role provides 120 annual holidays, a two-day weekend, public holidays, paid leave, and specified social-insurance, commuting, learning-support, and other employee programs.
