About this role

This is a full-time Rails Engineer position based in Tokyo. The role focuses on the company’s food-and-health web services, including the “Oishi Kenko” website and other applications. Engineers are expected to consider improvements from the user’s perspective, identify usability issues, and contribute to service development from planning through implementation and measurement of results.

Main development work includes designing and building APIs, models, and databases with Ruby on Rails, together with front-end design and implementation using React.js, TypeScript, Haml, and Sass. The front-end environment is being shifted from Haml toward React.js. The engineer may also design and build infrastructure for the company’s services using AWS and GCP. The standard infrastructure uses AWS, with services deployed on ECS; GCP is used for analytics and machine-learning-related tasks. CircleCI is used by almost all services as the continuous integration tool.

Applicants are expected to have experience developing services with a programming language, regardless of which language was used. Professional Ruby experience is not required for applicants seeking a career change from PHP or mobile application development. For the junior development track, professional engineering experience is not required, but applicants should have some application development experience with Ruby or Ruby on Rails, with at least four months of learning or development experience indicated as a guideline. Students applying under a new-graduate track are not eligible.

The products address food, health, and medical care. They include a meal-management application for patients and consumers, the Kakaris dietary-guidance solution for medical institutions, and solutions for health insurance societies. The organization includes engineers, designers, and registered dietitians, and engineers are encouraged to take ownership of decisions about measures, implementation, and technology selection. The team also aims to have engineers lead marketing initiatives based on key performance indicators, then handle implementation and impact measurement.

The company describes itself as a startup with approximately 45 members. Remote work and core-time flextime are used. A MacBook Pro is provided for development. Source-code review by another engineer is required, and new employees receive onboarding support including monthly one-on-one lunches with a mentor and regular meetings with the CEO during their first six months. Online interviews are available.
