Backend Engineer

This role designs, builds, and maintains scalable backend systems for Fanicon, a subscription-based premium fan community platform where fans engage directly with artists and other personalities. The engineer works with product managers, engineering managers, and cross-functional stakeholders to understand business challenges and turn them into technical solutions. Responsibilities include leading and mentoring engineers, supporting the development of junior team members, making technical decisions, improving backend architecture, identifying areas for improvement, resolving complex technical issues, and maintaining system scalability and reliability.

Required experience includes at least five years in backend development and system architecture, along with a record of designing and scaling backend systems in high-performance environments. The role requires expertise in cloud computing, microservices architecture, and containerization, including Kubernetes. Experience with databases is required, with SQL preferred, including performance optimization, data modeling, and scaling strategies. The posting also requires strong problem-solving, communication, stakeholder collaboration, technical ownership, delivery in a fast-paced environment, continuous learning, and experience leading and coaching engineers. Business-level Japanese and English are listed among the minimum qualifications, while the language requirements also state business-level proficiency in Japanese or English.

The position is based at the Harajuku Office in Shibuya, Tokyo. Employment is listed as full-time, with the terms describing a permanent employee or contract employee arrangement and a six-month probationary period. Annual compensation is JPY 8,000,000 to JPY 13,000,000. The professional discretionary labor system has no fixed working hours; typical working hours are stated as 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Holidays and leave include Saturdays, Sundays, the New Year holiday from December 29 to January 3, annual paid leave, sick leave, maternity leave, and paternity leave.
