Data Science Research and Development Intern

About this role

This research and development internship analyzes operational data from food and health services. The intern will form hypotheses and work with food, body-weight, sleep, meal, recipe, nutrition, and condition-change data to investigate how eating patterns affect health.

Example assignments include designing and testing recommendation systems using ingredients, recipes, menus, and nutrition information; analyzing and visualizing clinical research data in collaboration with university hospitals; and preparing business reports from food preferences and behavior logs. The work is intended to connect product development, academic research, and business projects.

The available data includes lifestyle logs recorded by users at a scale of several hundred thousand people, more than 10,000 recipes, and over 2 million menu records. The role may involve developing answers to practical questions through hands-on analysis rather than classroom exercises.

Required experience includes preprocessing and aggregation with Python and extracting data with SQL. The working data includes production logs stored in BigQuery. Notion and Google Slides are used for team sharing and reporting, and Python implementation or visualization may also be available depending on the intern's interests. Knowledge of web services built with Ruby on Rails, interest in machine learning or visualization tools, and interest in food, healthcare, academic papers, or research are welcomed.

The research and development team consists of three full-time members and three student part-time members with expertise in machine learning, statistical analysis, visualization, and recommendation systems. The company develops a consumer meal-management application and the Kakaris dietary guidance system for medical institutions, and conducts clinical research and joint projects with pharmaceutical, food, and insurance companies. Team members include engineers working on recommendation models and clinical research, as well as data scientists. Communication and review take place through Slack, Notion, and regular team reviews. The position is an internship in Tokyo, and online interviews are accepted.
