Senior Backend Engineer

FOLIO is recruiting a Senior Backend Engineer to lead development as its online securities startup accelerates work on asset-management products. The role covers both consumer and business services: ROBOPRO, an AI robo-advisor, and Omakase Investment for consumers, as well as 4RAP, a SaaS asset-management platform for financial institutions.

Day-to-day work includes developing and operating features for consumer and business services, building backend APIs for web services and smartphone applications, and defining specifications with business members who have financial expertise, UX designers, and frontend engineers. The engineer will continuously modify, operate, monitor, and strengthen microservices, validate libraries and tools, and conduct proofs of concept. Example projects include company-specific onboarding for the business product, adding features to the business product, and improving or automating release processes and environment setup.

The primary development language is Scala. Deployment and batch execution use Argo CD and Argo Workflows on EKS, with Jenkins. Version control uses GitLab. The listed communication and collaboration tools are Slack, Confluence, Jira, Zoom, and Miro, while Figma is used for design. Infrastructure includes AWS, Datadog, and Terraform. Code review and testing are required. Depending on the team, the engineer may also develop an administrative interface using TypeScript and Next.js.

Prior Scala experience is not essential; the posting states that Scala can be learned during the work. The expected scope of contribution is broad and depends on the candidate’s skills and experience. Depending on the candidate’s preferences, project-manager-type responsibilities such as customer discussions and development-roadmap planning, or engineering-management responsibilities, may also be available.

The position uses a discretionary work system. Work is generally fully remote, with optional office attendance activities for team interaction. The stated immediate work location is the company’s office in Ichibancho, Chiyoda, Tokyo, together with telework locations including an employee’s home or an equivalent place.
