Senior Data Engineer

About this role

Based in Tokyo, the Senior Data Engineer joins the BNEF Data team to expand renewable-energy databases and deliver data products. The role designs, builds, and optimizes data models, automated pipelines, scalable workflows, and data-quality frameworks for data acquisition, quality control, and operational processes. It applies statistical methods, Python, programming, machine learning, and automation to improve data quality, generate insights, and increase efficiency.

Responsibilities include incident and problem management, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, remediation, and preventive solutions. The engineer partners with Engineering, Product, and Commercial teams to develop, enhance, and integrate data products and workflows. The role also identifies process improvements through automation and workflow optimization, reduces manual work, translates stakeholder and customer feedback into data strategies and product roadmaps, monitors industry, market, and dataset developments, makes data-driven decisions, and communicates project and operational outcomes through metrics and reporting.

The position is part of the BNEF Data team and works across technology and the energy transition. It involves collaboration with Bloomberg's global Data and BloombergNEF Product teams in Princeton, New York, London, and Asia, as well as with clients and internal stakeholders. The work includes data lifecycle management, operational efficiency, and scalable data products.

Applicants need a bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Mathematics, STEM, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience. The posting requires 3–5 years of data-management experience with a record of improving data quality, accuracy, efficiency, and timeliness. Required capabilities include data analysis and profiling using Python, SQL, Excel, and modern data-processing technologies; experience with Qlik Sense, Tableau, or Splunk; data modeling, semantic data structures, or knowledge-graph concepts; project management; prioritization; process improvement through automation, AI/LLM solutions, and scalable technologies; problem solving; and communication and stakeholder management in English. Effective collaboration across teams and with clients, along with demonstrated continuous career growth within an organization, is also required.

Experience with the Bloomberg Terminal or Bloomberg Market Concepts certification, knowledge of renewable energy or a related industry, and proficiency in Chinese or another Asian language to support multilingual data coverage are listed as desirable qualifications.
