Chugai Pharmaceutical focuses on prescription drugs, having sold its over-the-counter business in 2004. Oncology accounts for 52.2% of its sales in Japan, alongside bone and joint, autoimmune, renal and neurological diseases and hemophilia. It launched the first antibody drug made in Japan in 2005 and holds the top share of Japan’s antibody drug market (2025).
A strategic alliance with Roche lets it market Roche medicines exclusively in Japan while it stays listed and independent. It is adding macrocyclic peptides to antibodies and small molecules, with research at Chugai Life Science Park Yokohama, opened in 2023. It had 7,872 consolidated employees at the end of 2025.
