Sumitomo Metal Mining works in three businesses: mineral resources, smelting and refining, and materials. It wholly owns and operates the Hishikari Mine, Japan's largest commercially operating gold mine, and takes part in mines overseas. The Toyo Smelter & Refinery produces copper, the company runs Japan's only refinery producing electrolytic nickel and cobalt, and its HPAL technology recovers nickel from low-grade ore.
The materials business makes cathode materials for hybrid and electric vehicle batteries, including NCA and NMC, as well as lithium tantalate and lithium niobate for SAW filters. It also recovers copper and nickel from used lithium-ion batteries for reuse as battery materials. Its corporate profile lists 7,507 consolidated employees and a head office in Shimbashi, Minato, Tokyo.
