Junior Game Designer

About this role

This junior game design role is part of the Game Design Team at PlayStation Studios Team ASOBI and reports to a Lead Game Designer. The work is based in the Tokyo area and is expected to be performed onsite.

Day-to-day responsibilities include imagining, sketching and presenting creative gameplay ideas. The designer creates fun and original game levels with a game editor, develops concepts for gameplay mechanics, and uses existing gameplay modules in creative ways inside a Maya-based game editor. The role also involves collaborating with colleagues from other disciplines involved in making a video game.

The position is open to candidates at all experience levels, and previous professional game experience is not required. Required capabilities include a strong interest in game design and play, good sketching ability, strong knowledge of other games and gameplay mechanics, and analytical ability. Candidates must be able to explain precisely why a gameplay mechanic is fun, think in simple and universal terms, and show interest in games intended for a broad worldwide audience. The role also requires the ability to work quickly and autonomously, attention to detail, patience and willingness to learn, a respectful approach to others, and a social, outgoing way of working.

The stated tools and subject areas are a Maya-based game editor, gameplay mechanics, game levels and general video-game development. The role requires learning a range of additional skills related to game development. Training and coaching on design philosophies, cultural thinking and production techniques may be provided when needed. An open and positive learning attitude, high motivation and commitment are expected.

The employment arrangement is permanent or contract-based and full-time. The working day is eight hours, with some flexibility in timing. Intermediate Japanese language skill is required. Willingness to learn English is welcomed, and English conversation lessons may be available. As part of the selection process, candidates may be asked to complete a practical test using their own time and resources.
