Gameplay Programmer

About this role

Team ASOBI, a Tokyo-based first-party PlayStation studio, is hiring a mid-level or senior Gameplay Programmer for its gameplay programming team. The team develops PlayStation games and was responsible for ASTRO BOT on PS5.

The programmer will create advanced gameplay mechanics centered on physics engines and related techniques. Daily work includes using physics simulations and algorithms built from scratch to prototype player controls and other gameplay interactions, then raising prototypes to production quality. The role requires fast, efficient iteration, continued prototype improvement, and the use of game-design judgment, creativity, and humor when designing and implementing interactions.

The programmer will work with system programmers, game designers, and artists to polish prototypes. Other responsibilities include learning the studio’s in-house gameplay engine, systems, and tools; managing tasks and issues independently; and delivering high-quality gameplay on schedule.

Applicants must have at least five years of production experience in games, in-depth knowledge of physics engines and related algorithms, C++ development experience, and experience with gameplay prototyping. The position is in the PlayStation Studios Team ASOBI gameplay programming team. It is full-time at eight hours per day and may be offered as either a permanent employee or a contract employee. The supervisor is the Lead Gameplay Programmer. The work location is the Tokyo area. Remote work is possible after a six-month probationary period.

Fluent Japanese is required. English proficiency is not required, although interest in learning English is welcomed; paid English conversation lessons are available. Applicants may be asked to complete a practical test using their own time and resources.
