IoT Platform Engineer

This role designs and develops Akerun Web, the web platform for the Akerun smart-lock access-management system. The engineer will help strengthen the platform for the next-generation Gateway concept and work with web, firmware, mobile, QA, and SRE engineers.

A main responsibility is designing and developing IoT-device integrations. This includes defining specifications and building communication between smartphones, gateways, smart locks, and other IoT equipment using wireless technologies such as BLE. The role also builds the communication infrastructure that transfers data from devices to the cloud and sends commands from the cloud to devices. Protocols and APIs are designed to remain flexible and extensible as additional IoT devices are connected.

The position also covers backend development for the Akerun Web platform, primarily with Ruby on Rails. Responsibilities include web-application API design, business-logic implementation, database design and optimization, and system development that considers scalability, performance, and security. The engineer participates through testing, deployment, operation, and maintenance to support stable service operation.

The engineer researches current IoT technologies, including new communication protocols, edge computing, and AI, and conducts technical research and validation for their application to Akerun. Proofs of concept are used to assess feasibility and impact, with proposals made for product adoption.

Required qualifications are at least three years of practical backend development experience for web applications, with no specific programming language required, and experience developing an integration platform for IoT devices. The IoT experience may include knowledge of protocols such as BLE or MQTT, or system-development experience involving data collection from or control of devices. Preferred experience includes edge-device data processing or communication optimization, practical microservices design, development, or operation, large-scale data processing, and security threats and countermeasures for IoT devices or cloud systems. Experience working with product owners and designers to understand business requirements and user issues is also preferred, as are cloud system design, construction, and operation using AWS, GCP, or Azure, and RDBMS design, development, and performance tuning with systems such as MySQL or PostgreSQL.

The named technology stack includes Ruby on Rails, Go, Vue.js, React, Docker, AWS, GCP, MySQL with Amazon Aurora, AWS CodePipeline, AWS CodeBuild, CircleCI, Jenkins, Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, Google Workspace, Slack, JIRA, GitHub, and Figma. Cursor, Devin, and Gemini Advanced are also provided for AI-assisted development and knowledge sharing.

The position is full-time and based in Minato, Tokyo. Remote work is available, but the role is not fully remote; office attendance is generally required once a week, with an office-centered arrangement also possible. The position uses a discretionary work system, with standard hours of 9:30–18:30 and a one-hour break. Average monthly overtime is stated as approximately 15–20 hours. The probationary period is six months. Annual holidays total 124 days, including weekends and public holidays, year-end holidays from December 29 to January 3, 10 days of paid leave granted upon joining, and five days of special leave. Social insurance includes employees’ pension, health insurance, employment insurance, and workers’ compensation insurance.

The listed annual salary range is 7,000,000 to 10,000,000 JPY. The monthly salary range is 584,000 to 835,000 JPY and includes ability-based pay, performance-variable pay, and a discretionary allowance covering 45 hours of overtime; additional premium pay is provided when applicable.
