Research Software Engineer (Language Learning)

About this role

This full-time software engineering role is based in Tokyo and sits within the Research and Development team under CTO Llion Jones. The work focuses on applying advanced machine learning to second-language learning, initially for learners of Japanese and potentially for other languages in the future.

The engineer will collaborate with research scientists and engineers to develop AI-based methods and tools for language learners. Responsibilities include building user-facing web applications and systems that support listening practice, including narratives and dialogs, vocabulary development, writing skills, and the testing and monitoring of learner progress. The role involves working across the full stack and building and deploying scalable, mission-critical applications on a major cloud platform.

Applicants must have at least three years of software engineering experience and be willing to work across the full stack. Strong Python proficiency is required for the machine learning ecosystem, along with experience in another language such as Go, Node.js, or TypeScript. The posting also requires machine learning proficiency, experience with web development frameworks such as React, Next.js, Vue, or similar technologies, cloud platform experience with GCP, AWS, or Azure, and experience with Docker containerization.

Preferred experience includes generative AI technologies such as large language models or AI agents; AI-assisted coding tools including Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Devin, or Cursor; production-ready API and database design and management; and DevOps practices such as infrastructure as code and CI/CD pipeline setup. Previous interest or experience with second-language learning tools is also preferred but not required.

English ability sufficient for collaboration on technical projects with international team members is preferred. Japanese ability is described as a strong advantage, and applicants who are native Japanese speakers or have passed JLPT N1 or N2 are asked to mention it.
