Heartseed develops regenerative cell-therapy candidates for severe heart failure. Its lead candidate, HS-001, uses donor iPS-cell-derived ventricular cardiomyocytes aggregated into spheroids of about 1,000 cells, which are injected directly into heart muscle. The approach aims to replace lost heart muscle and is in clinical development.
Its technology platform covers differentiation of iPS cells into cardiomyocytes, cell purification and large-scale culture. A patented purification method removes undifferentiated cells and non-cardiomyocytes to reduce the risk of tumor formation. The company is also developing dedicated transplantation devices so spheroids can be delivered consistently without relying on the operator's skill.
