Smartpay is a Japan-based fintech providing buy now, pay later services to consumers and online and physical retailers. Shoppers can divide purchases into three installments over two months without interest or fees, using a credit card or linked bank account. Smartpay handles payment and fraud risk, settles participating merchants and earns revenue through fees deducted from merchant transactions.
Its Bank Direct service connects its app to more than 200 Japanese financial institutions for account-based payments. Smartpay also supports in-store checkout through merchant-generated QR codes and NFC-based Smart Touch payments.
