3D Environment Artist

About this role

This 3D Environment Artist role is part of the PlayStation Studios Team ASOBI art team. The artist creates environment art for games, including high-quality 3D models and textures for both organic and architectural assets. Daily responsibilities include laying out levels with in-house editors, troubleshooting levels, and maintaining design integrity, visual quality, and performance. The role involves close collaboration with the Environment Art Team and Level Designers and reports to a Lead 3D Environment Artist.

Required experience is as an Environment Artist in game development, feature film, or VFX. Candidates need excellent modeling and UV skills using Maya, ZBrush, or equivalent software, with the ability to produce high-quality environment assets at a fast pace. The role also requires strong environment-composition skills that support intended gameplay, the ability to envision complete levels with limited concept art and direction, and strong texturing skills using Substance Painter and Substance Designer. The artist must be able to apply realistic texturing techniques to a playful art style and adapt closely to a specific art direction.

The posting also requires the ability to work autonomously, deliver results on time, and contribute as a positive team player with strong communication skills. A task-driven, motivated, and proactive approach is expected, along with an interest in art, game design, and gaming.

Team ASOBI is a Tokyo-based first-party PlayStation studio responsible for ASTRO BOT for PS5. The position is in the Tokyo area within the PlayStation Studios Team ASOBI art team. It is full-time, with an eight-hour workday, and is available as either a permanent or contract role. Remote work is available after a six-month probationary period.

The language information differs between the two language sections. The English section states that basic Japanese is required and that Japanese lessons will be provided and paid for, while the Japanese section welcomes fluent Japanese ability and a willingness to learn English. As part of the selection process, applicants must complete a practical test using their own time and resources.
