This role designs and develops the digital and analog circuits used in the avionics system installed in the ZERO small rocket. The avionics system consists of multiple electronic circuits and CPUs distributed throughout the vehicle that work together to control the rocket.
Responsibilities include designing and evaluating signal-processing circuits; front ends and ADC interfaces for sensors such as IMUs, pressure, temperature, and strain gauges; and circuits around microcontrollers, FPGAs, SoCs, and digital communications within the vehicle. The role also covers component selection and design of digital communication interfaces including automotive Ethernet, RS-485/422, and LVDS.
The engineer designs and analyzes high-density, high-reliability circuit boards, including EMI/EMC countermeasures and SI/PI signal and power integrity analysis. Responsibilities also include directing and reviewing board design with external partners.
Reliability work includes design verification based on FMEA and worst-case analysis. The role plans environmental test programs and participates in hardware evaluations involving temperature, vacuum, EMC, and vibration testing.
The avionics group is responsible for development of the rocket’s electronic control system. In cooperation with related groups, it conducts integration tests with other subsystems, engine firing tests, and stage firing tests. The group also performs operations during rocket launches, covering activities across the rocket development process from beginning to end.
