Leads AD/ADAS system safety by allocating requirements to software components, defining safety mechanisms, planning verification, and maintaining safety cases, risk analyses, and traceability.

About this role

This senior role leads system safety engineering for AD/ADAS systems in Tokyo. The work includes allocating safety requirements from the system level to software components and defining clear interfaces, state transitions, timing and resource constraints, and acceptance criteria.

The role leads the definition and implementation of safety mechanisms such as diagnostics, redundancy, watchdogs, validity checks, safety-boundary monitoring, degraded modes, and safe states. It also ensures that the effectiveness of these mechanisms is appropriately verified.

Working with the V&V team, the engineer designs safety verification strategies covering unit, integration, system, HIL, and vehicle testing. The role establishes objective pass and fail criteria and safety KPIs, while ensuring that the evidence required for the safety case is complete.

Responsibilities include preparing safety-case evidence and risk assessments and explaining their rationale and supporting evidence to internal and external stakeholders and during audits. The engineer leads or performs FMEA/FMEDA, FTA, interface hazard reviews, and resource and timing analyses, then applies the results to design improvements and confirmation activities.

The position works closely with Safety Architecture on HARA, safety-goal definition, and ASIL decomposition; with Systems Engineering on architecture consistency and ICD; with ML Safety on data, ODD, and monitoring strategies; and with Cybersecurity on coordinated safety and security design.

The role also drives impact analysis for change requests, deviations, and exemptions, maintaining safety intent and traceability across releases. Focused reviews are conducted for requirements specifications, designs, and test plans, with issues and gaps addressed promptly.
