Backend Engineer (Transaction Management)

The Transaction Management team develops and maintains in-house systems that ensure customer funds move and are managed correctly. This backend engineer will maintain and develop transaction-processing and deposit and withdrawal processing, as well as implement new features for the WealthNavi service.

The role supports stable operation of core business functions while addressing technical challenges created by business growth and accumulated data. Responsibilities include improving architecture, reviewing system boundaries, resolving technical debt, decomposing a monolith, moving toward microservices and containerization, and handling version upgrades for Java, frameworks and libraries. The engineer will also improve development processes, strengthen test automation and CI/CD infrastructure, and work with product managers, infrastructure engineers and QA members to define specifications and reach agreement. In a small team, the position includes lead or sub-lead duties, code reviews and technical support for team members.

Required qualifications are at least three years of development experience with Java and Spring Boot, experience covering the full process from requirements definition through release, and experience developing and operating applications in a cloud environment. Experience with medium- to large-scale systems or new products, architecture design and technology selection is welcomed. Intellectual curiosity about the securities and finance domain is welcomed, and prior experience in that domain is not required.

WealthNavi is an automated asset-management service. The Transaction Management team works on a core area that applies algorithms based on financial engineering and supports systems managing assets for several hundred thousand customers. The business is also expanding beyond asset management toward a broader financial platform covering areas such as life insurance, pensions and personal financial management, with MAP AI identified as a central initiative.

This is a full-time regular employee position in Shinagawa, Tokyo.

Communication programs include a weekly company Happy Hour, weekly All Hands meetings, welcome lunches for new joiners and monthly team lunches. The work environment offers a choice of Mac or Windows computers, subject to assignment exceptions, and combines at least three days per week in the office with working from home; assignment-specific exceptions may apply. The selection process is a casual interview, interviews with current team members and the team lead, a group-lead interview, a CTO interview, and an offer meeting, although the process may change.
