Backend Engineer

This role leads backend design and development for Musubi, an in-house service. Responsibilities include developing new features and modifying existing functions, while analyzing the current system from the perspectives of quality, stability, performance and security. The engineer leads future-oriented design and, when needed, reviews existing designs and implementations and addresses technical debt.

The role works with product managers to turn product vision and requirements into detailed requirements and specifications. This involves discussing the details with stakeholders under product manager leadership and ensuring that the resulting decisions are technically valid.

The engineer also improves the team’s development efficiency by establishing coding standards and other development rules, standardizing processes such as Scrum, improving CI/CD, and automating operational tasks. Based on previous development experience and knowledge, the role supports the growth of team members.

Musubi was released in 2017 and is used by many pharmacies. The business handles medical information, so reliability and security requirements are particularly high. Further feature development is planned, and the number of users is expected to grow. The team therefore needs to continue development while maintaining reliability and performance, with this role helping guide the system toward an appropriate long-term design.

The stated development environment includes Python and TypeScript; FastAPI, Pyramid and Angular; and AWS services including DynamoDB, Aurora, Cognito, API Gateway, Lambda, OpenSearch Service and SQS. Infrastructure as code uses AWS CDK and Terraform. Monitoring uses Datadog, PagerDuty and Sentry, while CI/CD uses GitHub Actions. Communication tools are Google Workspace and Slack, documentation is managed in esa, and task management uses JIRA.

The stated selection process is document screening, a casual interview, two to three interviews, an aptitude test, a reference check and an offer meeting. The process may change depending on circumstances. The reference check uses back check and gathers questionnaire responses from people who worked with the candidate in their current or previous role. The check is completed online, and the company does not contact the reference providers directly. The work location is in Nishi-Shimbashi, Minato-ku, Tokyo.
