The role defines and guides implementation of safety mechanisms such as diagnostics, redundancy, watchdogs, plausibility checks, safety-envelope monitors, degraded modes, and safe states. Their effectiveness must be verified.
In partnership with V&V, the engineer develops safety verification strategies covering unit, integration, system, hardware-in-the-loop, and vehicle testing. The role derives objective pass/fail criteria and safety KPIs and ensures that evidence for the Safety Case is complete.
The engineer contributes evidence and risk assessments to the Safety Case and presents the rationale and supporting evidence to internal and external stakeholders and auditors. Responsibilities also include leading or participating in FMEA, FMEDA, FTA, interface hazard reviews, and resource and timing analyses. Findings from these analyses are incorporated into design updates and confirmation measures.
The position works closely with Safety Architecture on HARA, safety-goal setting, and ASIL decomposition; with Systems Engineering on architecture cohesion and interface control documents; with ML Safety on data, operational design domain, and monitoring strategies; and with Cybersecurity on safety-security co-engineering.
The role drives change-impact analysis for change requests, deviations, and waivers to preserve safety intent and traceability across releases. It also conducts focused reviews of requirements, designs, and test plans to identify and close gaps quickly.
