This full-time Backend Engineer role is part of the Satellite Operation Planning Unit in the Data Production Department. The department supports operations of the StriX small SAR satellite constellation, image data production, and distribution of data products.
The role develops, operates, and improves the Spacecraft Control Subsystem, an in-house ground-system component at the center of satellite operations. The subsystem supports satellite operation planning, command-sequence generation, and calculation of past and predicted satellite positions and velocities. The position focuses on developing orbit determination and propagation applications.
The engineer will work closely with the orbit determination team to deliver highly accurate orbit determination and propagation while minimizing computation time and system load and keeping the applications maintainable. Responsibilities include ongoing operation and enhancement of the subsystem, supporting greater operational automation and stability, and addressing varied orbit-determination requirements as the company plans to launch more satellites. The subsystem interacts with the customer-facing Data Platform and the Data Processing Subsystem that generates SAR products, so its quality and efficiency directly affect product quality.
Required qualifications include at least three years of system development experience on GCP or AWS, at least three years of software development experience using MATLAB, and software development experience with at least one of Golang, Python, or C++.
