Backend Engineer (Common Software)

This backend engineering role belongs to the SWE team, which develops shared foundations used across development teams, improves system performance, and addresses technical debt. The team supports long-term, healthy operation of internally developed customer-facing applications, trading systems, and administrative operations systems.

Responsibilities include designing, developing, maintaining, and improving shared platforms used by the development organization. The role also helps standardize development procedures between teams, including coding conventions and Git operating rules. It identifies issues in system structures and technology choices such as frameworks from a sustainability perspective, develops solutions, and supports their introduction. The position also involves leading technical-debt reduction, proposing improvements, and supporting engineers in broadening their understanding of development work.

Example projects include improving the generation speed of portfolio valuations, history graphs, and security-level portfolio views shown in the application home screen and service site. Another project is the shared WealthNavi ID platform, built with Auth0 to manage integrated user IDs across products as the business expands to multiple products.

Required qualifications are at least three years of development experience with Java and Spring Boot, at least five years of total development experience, experience developing and operating BtoC applications in cloud environments, and experience defining requirements and carrying out basic and detailed architecture design for medium-to-large-scale systems or new products. Experience establishing development standards, working on mission-critical systems, coordinating multiple stakeholders, and knowledge of financial operations are welcomed.

The development environment includes Java and Kotlin; Spring Boot and Quarkus for backend development; Vue and React for frontend development; Aurora MySQL and BigQuery; AWS, GCP, Datadog, and JP1; and Slack, JIRA, Bitbucket, GitHub, and IntelliJ. The business develops the WealthNavi automated asset-management robo-advisor and other financial services.

The position is a full-time permanent role in Shinagawa, Tokyo.

The workplace uses hybrid working, combining at least three office days per week with working from home, subject to some assignment-specific exceptions. Employees may choose a Mac or Windows computer, subject to some assignment exceptions. Selection consists of document screening, approximately two to three interviews with employees and executives, and an offer, although the process may change.
