Senior Engineer

This is an open senior engineering position supporting freee’s accounting, tax filing, and human resources and payroll products. The assignment is matched through interviews to the candidate’s prior experience and preferred direction. The role focuses on transforming large, established products into AI-native products and on redefining the way back-office software is developed and delivered.

In the accounting product, the engineer may help re-architect a monolithic product to improve development scale and speed, provide AI-agent experiences, strengthen API integrations, expand industry-specific functions, and improve the development platform. The tax filing product involves a complex tax domain, large-scale product development, and quality requirements for professional users including tax accountants. The payroll product supports payroll calculations for tens of thousands of businesses and millions of employees, covering employee information, attendance, payroll, and year-end adjustments. It also involves deep legal and regulatory requirements, AI-based efficiency improvements, and business process outsourcing initiatives.

Possible responsibilities include Product Lead, Engineering Manager, and Technical Lead work. A Product Lead uses personal and team technical and development capabilities to achieve OKRs, improve product value, contribute to the business, and deliver user value quickly. An Engineering Manager brings out the capabilities of individuals and teams, supports their growth, and builds the organization, culture, and processes needed to create user value continuously. A Technical Lead owns technical decisions for the team, leads necessary technical investment, sets technical direction for an assigned area, and proposes and drives solutions to technical issues across products, platforms, or shared technical areas.

The employment type is permanent full-time employment with a three-month probationary period. The work location is the Tokyo office at Art Village Osaki Central Tower 21F, 1-2-2 Osaki, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; the location may change because of business conditions or office relocation. The working arrangement is a discretionary labor system with eight deemed working hours per day. Holidays and leave include Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end and New Year holidays, condolence leave, paid leave granted from the start date, and six paid sick-leave days per year.
