Web Engineer

This is an open development leadership position in freee’s spend-management business. The business provides integrated cloud software for small businesses and individuals, including accounting, human resources and labor management, and sales management. The spend-management area covers corporate cards, BaaS, factoring, and other financial functions.

The role leads product development across stages from 0-to-1 launches through 10-to-100 growth. Depending on experience, the person will accelerate business growth through product strategy, organizational leadership, or technology strategy. Responsibilities include taking on a broad range of technical areas, driving adoption of technical practices within the team, planning technology strategy, and leading products and teams. The assigned duties may change according to business circumstances and the individual’s suitability.

Required qualifications include at least three years of backend development using a statically typed language, at least one year of frontend development with a modern framework, and experience designing and developing databases with an RDBMS. Candidates must also have experience designing, developing, and operating medium- to large-scale systems where scalability and service-to-service integration must be considered. Business-level Japanese proficiency of N2 or above is required.

Preferred experience includes loosely coupled, domain-aware design using approaches such as microservices and clean architecture; practical or personal experimentation with AI-driven development; designing and developing cloud applications on AWS or GCP; and development in financial or accounting domains. Experience in engineering management, organizational development through hiring and training, or leading technically difficult work such as architecture design and non-functional requirements is also welcomed. The role is expected to value communication inside and outside the team, attention to current technical information, rapid delivery of useful products to customers, and high-quality code beyond merely making software work. Employment is full-time with a three-month probationary period. The work location is freee’s Tokyo office at 21F ArtVillage Osaki Central Tower, 1-2-2 Osaki, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; the location may change because of business circumstances or an office move. Working hours use a discretionary labor system with eight deemed hours per day. Holidays include Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, year-end and New Year holidays, condolence leave, paid leave granted on the joining date, and six paid sick-leave days per year.
