Senior Data Engineering Manager

This full-time senior manager position leads the team responsible for freee’s company-wide data platform and data management. The platform includes more than 10,000 tables, over one million monthly queries, and databases across dozens of microservices. The organization is moving toward a hub-and-spoke data mesh and establishing data management at full scale.

The role designs, develops, maintains, and operates the company-wide data platform centered on Google Cloud and BigQuery. It plans and runs data-management solutions covering data-risk control, metadata management, data observability, and master data management. Company-wide initiatives include improving data quality at its sources through GitOps and data contracts, integrating real-time and multimodal object data, building automated access controls based on data-risk assessment, advancing master data management, and enabling data use through AI agents.

As manager of the platform engineering team, the position manages platform engineers and analytics engineers. Responsibilities include setting goals, developing team members, hiring, and team building. The manager gathers requirements from data users such as product, sales, and AI engineering teams, while coordinating stakeholders across multiple departments and with executive leadership. Assigned duties may change according to the company’s business situation and the individual’s suitability.

Required experience includes at least five years developing, maintaining, and operating a cloud data warehouse such as Google Cloud, Snowflake, or Databricks. The posting also requires at least three years of backend programming with Python or Go, at least three years practicing DevOps and building and operating CI/CD, and at least three years developing SQL pipelines from multiple data sources. Candidates must have experience developing and operating a company-wide or cross-domain data platform spanning multiple domains or products, managing an engineering team of five or more, and coordinating interests and gathering requirements from stakeholders with different contexts and backgrounds.

Knowledge of DMBOK and experience designing or operating data meshes or semantic layers, metadata management, data catalogs, data observability, master data management, data contracts, and generative-AI-based data management are welcomed. Experience developing a one- to two-year strategy, proposing it to executives, and translating it into an implementation plan is also welcomed.

The team supports freee’s integrated cloud software for small businesses and individuals, including accounting, human-resources and labor-management, sales-management, tax-filing, and electronic-signature products.
