Lead customer projects for major Japanese companies from scope and architecture through data pipelines, implementation, rollout and operations, coordinating departments. Remote work is available.
About this role
The Forward Deployed Software Engineer leads customer-specific development projects for major Japanese companies using Speeda, a SaaS platform for economic information. The role works directly with customers to understand their business processes and data, combine those data with Speeda information, and deliver systems that support day-to-day decision-making. Responsibilities extend from feasibility discussions and agreement on scope and success criteria to architecture, implementation, production deployment, operations, and maintenance. The role also coordinates across multiple customer departments and handles internal reviews and approval processes. The assigned scope may vary by project phase and size.
Required qualifications include practical experience developing web applications or data platforms, generally for at least three years. Experience must include design, code review, and operations in addition to implementation. Candidates must have worked directly with customers from requirements definition, including reaching agreement on scope and deadlines. Because work at customer sites may be required, candidates must be able to work from the office and visit customers. Native-level Japanese communication and experience managing a small team of two to five people are also required.
Experience with customers that have high security requirements, such as financial institutions, major operating companies, or consulting firms, is welcome. Other preferred experience includes building and operating pipelines for mixed structured and unstructured corporate or financial data; building systems in customer environments such as on-premises environments or customer cloud tenants; and responding to security check sheets, external vendor reviews, and vulnerability assessments. The role suits candidates who want to decide what to build with customers, can begin work when requirements are not yet fixed, can handle reviews, approvals, and cross-department coordination, and are interested in customers’ business operations.
The standard backend stack is Kotlin and Spring Boot, with TypeScript and Next.js on the frontend. Infrastructure uses Google Cloud and AWS, including customer tenants. Data stores include PostgreSQL and Snowflake. Data pipelines are built with workflow-management and data-transfer tools selected according to each customer environment. Development tools include Slack, Google Workspace, Notion, Figma, GitHub, Docker, Datadog, Claude Code, Codex, and Devin; customer approval may restrict the use of tools in individual projects.
