Senior Software Engineer (Team Leader Candidate)

This position is part of the Satellite Operation System Development Team, which develops the ground segment used to operate satellites. The system handles customer mission requests such as imaging requests, schedules those requests, delivers mission data generated on satellites to customers, generates and uplinks commands, receives and monitors telemetry, and supports orbit operations. It provides necessary information to customers, operation engineers, and domain engineers responsible for satellite components.

The engineer will develop, maintain, test, and deploy this system with other team members. Responsibilities also include investigating problems, designing and implementing solutions, carrying out temporary manual operations when needed, and documenting and handing over those procedures. Prior knowledge of satellites or space is not required; software engineering knowledge and ability are sufficient, with domain knowledge learned during the work.

As a team leader candidate, the role includes leading requirements definition with a system engineer, preparing external and internal specifications, and leading design reviews based on those documents. The engineer will design interfaces between members and teams, build agreement on those interfaces, manage development schedules and task priorities, contribute to technical decisions, and support the technical growth of team members.

Required qualifications include the ability to identify mathematical and algorithmic problems independently and solve them through programming; more than five years of developing, improving, and operating software systems with Python; more than five years of software development, improvement, and operation on Unix/Linux systems; and more than five years of development based on writing and reviewing requirements, external specifications, and internal specifications. Experience with Git, relational databases, software interface design, and identifying hidden requirements during design discussions is also required. The candidate should have a clear interest in leading and mentoring a technical team, be comfortable communicating in spoken English, and be willing to continue improving English communication. Japanese proficiency equivalent to JLPT N1 or above is required.

Preferred experience includes C++ development; AWS services such as ECS, SQS, S3, and CloudWatch; using and tuning PostgreSQL; leading and mentoring a technical team; leading a multicultural team; or working in the space industry. Compensation is listed as TBD and will be decided based on experience and skills.

The position is based in Chuo-ku, Tokyo. It is a full-time, permanent position under a discretionary labor system. Holidays include two days off per week and national holidays, with annual paid leave, congratulatory and bereavement leave, and a fifth-year bonus leave. Commuting expenses are reimbursed at actual cost. A remote work system is available, and Japanese classes are provided for foreign employees. Benefits include health insurance, welfare pension, employment insurance, and workers' compensation insurance. Smoking is prohibited on site, and the probationary period is three months.
