Payment Services Backend Engineering Manager

The manager will lead backend development for USEN PAY, a cashless payment service for businesses. Responsibilities include planning backend development and schedules based on business plans and development roadmaps, designing architecture and selecting technologies with quality, speed and future scalability in mind, and reviewing infrastructure designs and cloud operations policies. The role also establishes and improves development rules, design guidelines and review standards, ensures quality through code reviews, raises the team's technical and design capabilities, plans improvements to development productivity, contributes to implementation in important or technically difficult areas, and improves maintenance and operation policies for existing applications.

The position includes development management and planning and execution of technology strategy. Close collaboration with the product manager and business teams is required, including participation in discussions about why and how products should be built. The role is expected to contribute to the growth of the cashless payment business and may develop toward leading the wider organization as CTO in the future.

Required qualifications include at least five years of development experience using Kotlin or Java, at least three years of practical experience with Sprint development, experience driving projects as a development leader, strong interest in and willingness to learn new and advanced technologies, and understanding and practical experience with Agile development methods. Knowledge or experience with AWS services, React development experience, and experience evaluating and improving development productivity are welcomed.

The development environment includes TypeScript, React and Tailwind CSS on the frontend; Kotlin and Spring Boot on the backend; Vitest, Playwright and kotest for testing; AWS and Terraform for infrastructure; Docker, GitHub, GitHub Actions and GitHub Copilot for development and operations; and JIRA, Notion and Figma for project management and collaboration.

The team consists of one product manager, two frontend members, four backend members and one infrastructure member, including two company employees and six partner members. The position is full-time and based at PMO Meguro in Shinagawa, Tokyo. Working hours use a flextime system without core hours, with a standard seven hours and 30 minutes per day and a 60-minute break. Employees can choose a hybrid style: Office Worker, generally attending the office at least three days per week, or Remote Worker, generally working remotely at least three days per week. Office attendance may be requested when in-person communication or meetings require it.
