Web Application Engineer

The Web Application Engineer develops and operates the Akerun access-management system, a cloud SaaS built around a smart-lock IoT product. The role covers backend and frontend work across the application lifecycle, from feature planning and requirements definition through architecture, detailed design, implementation and testing. Responsibilities include developing new functions such as authentication and integrations with other systems, improving existing features, addressing performance, maintainability and security, and handling end-of-life upgrades or replacement of third-party libraries and frameworks.

The engineer also monitors released systems, responds to alerts and incidents, performs root-cause analysis, analyzes logs and monitoring data, and plans preventive improvements. On the frontend, the role includes building reusable UI components with React and TypeScript, documenting them, and using user testing and analytics tools to plan and implement UX improvements. Backend responsibilities include designing and implementing versioned, security-conscious REST APIs, designing MySQL schemas, tuning queries, and introducing Redis caching. The infrastructure work includes container operations with Docker and ECS Fargate, infrastructure-as-code management with Terraform, automated deployment with GitHub Actions, and improved observability through metrics and alert configuration.

The stated technology environment includes Ruby on Rails, Go, React and Vue.js; Docker; AWS and GCP; MySQL with Amazon Aurora; AWS CodePipeline, AWS CodeBuild, CircleCI, GitHub Actions and Jenkins; Terraform and AWS CloudFormation; and Google Workspace, Slack, JIRA, GitHub and Figma. Practical experience designing, developing and operating web applications is required, together with development experience using at least one of Ruby, Go, Python or TypeScript. Experience with Ruby on Rails, Gin or React is listed as desirable.

The product provides access control, attendance management and security integrations for facilities. The engineer works with web, firmware, mobile, QA and SRE engineers in an organization of approximately 150 people, while product development and sales, marketing, customer success and logistics functions are handled internally. The company provides Cursor and Devin for AI-assisted development and Gemini Advanced for all employees, alongside internal technical study sessions and knowledge sharing.

This is a full-time position under a discretionary work system. The standard working hours are 9:30–18:30 with a one-hour break, and average overtime is stated as approximately 15–20 hours per month. The annual salary is JPY 6,000,000–10,000,000; monthly pay is listed as JPY 500,000–835,000 and includes ability-based pay, performance-based variable pay and a discretionary allowance. The allowance covers 45 hours of overtime, with additional premium pay for work beyond it. The position is based in Minato, Tokyo. Remote work is available, but fully remote work is not offered; office attendance is generally required one day per week. The trial period is six months.
