Lead Legal Generalist

This legal generalist role supports domestic and international fusion-related plant businesses. The legal function works with business divisions and project members as part of the projects, rather than only providing back-office advice. The work covers system engineering, equipment sales and procurement, technical consulting, research and development, and other fusion activities.

The main responsibilities include designing contract structures based on business schemes and drafting and reviewing Japanese and English agreements. Contract types include joint research agreements, technology licence agreements, procurement and sales contracts, public procurement contracts, non-disclosure agreements, and outsourcing agreements. The role must reflect technical details, commercial flows, and the allocation of risks in practical contracts.

The position also supports negotiations with domestic and international business partners. It organizes and visualizes legal and business risks, proposes negotiation policies and alternatives, and leads practical outcomes that consider business strategy, profitability, and long-term partnerships. Other duties include creating and updating contract templates and guidelines, reviewing standard clauses, developing templates by contract type, and improving the overall internal contract process.

The role handles disputes and issues arising during contract performance by organizing facts, assessing risks, and planning resolution strategies. External lawyers may be consulted when necessary. The position also researches and analyzes domestic and international laws and regulations affecting plant-related businesses and provides practical advice to business divisions. Planning and delivering internal education on contracts and legal compliance is part of the role.

Applicants need domestic and international contract-law or intellectual-property-law experience at a manufacturer, engineering company, trading company, or law firm. Required skills include reviewing contracts and assessing risks, drafting agreements directly, using legal technology services, and consulting external lawyers within the necessary scope without handing over the entire matter. The posting also seeks startup-level speed, accurate risk assessment rather than a zero-risk approach, stakeholder interviews, and practical response proposals.

Japanese document-writing and presentation ability at native or equivalent level is required. The role requires business-level or higher English ability for English contract legal work. Experience using Slack or Teams, Microsoft Office or Google applications, and hosting online meetings through Teams or Zoom is required. Business use of AI, excluding simple tasks such as translation, is preferred. Plant-industry experience, English contract review experience, and qualifications such as lawyer, patent attorney, or judicial scrivener are also welcomed.

The position is part-time under a fixed-term contract. Hourly pay is JPY 4,000 to 6,000, subject to consultation based on experience. Working hours are negotiable; the company’s standard hours are 9:00 to 18:00 with a one-hour break. Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, and the year-end and New Year period are holidays. The workplace is in Ota, Tokyo, with work at the Marunouchi satellite office in Chiyoda possible from June 2026. Remote work may be discussed for people living within commuting distance.
