Mechanical Design Engineer (Static Equipment)

This position is responsible for static-equipment design for fusion-plant R&D programs and projects. The engineer works on pressure vessels such as columns and heat exchangers, leading activities from R&D through basic plant design and detailed fabrication design. The work covers equipment used in high-temperature and high-radiation environments.

Responsibilities include converting project requirements and upstream process information, including PFDs and P&IDs, into specifications, data sheets, strength calculations, outline drawings, inspection and test plans, and RFP packages. The role also involves optimizing designs with customers and procurement manufacturers, evaluating cost and technical proposals to select vendors, reviewing vendor drawings, strength calculations and procedures, and managing procurement, fabrication, testing and delivery schedules. Vendor management is a central part of the position.

Required experience includes work on an overseas EPC project involving the design, fabrication or construction of columns, pressure vessels, heat exchangers or similar equipment as a contractor, subcontractor or vendor. Applicants must understand the importance of complying with an ISO 9001-equivalent quality management system and its related processes. Experience involving internal and external stakeholders in the management of project progress, cost and quality, specification discussions and document reviews is required.

The technical requirements include deep knowledge of ASME Section VIII, pressure-vessel structural studies using PV Elite or COMPRESS, and model and drawing creation with 3D CAD software. The posting also requires knowledge of heat-exchanger rating and review using HTRI or similar tools, experience reviewing WPS/PQR documents, and a basic understanding of ASME B31.3 requirements and seismic structural calculations for steel support structures, including LSD and ASD.

A US Professional Engineer qualification and hands-on experience in FEM-based strength analysis and evaluation are listed as preferred qualifications.
