About this role

This tech lead role leads technology strategy, architecture design, and platform improvements for the backend of the Receipt Challenge service. Responsibilities include selecting technologies for the assigned area, leading design reviews, planning refactoring and technical-debt reduction, and making design decisions that account for non-functional requirements and increased traffic resulting from expanded integrations with SmartNews and Yahoo! JAPAN. The role also drives gradual re-architecture while keeping existing services running, supports junior to mid-level engineers through technical guidance and code and design reviews, promotes AI-driven development in the team workflow, and contributes to the technology and organizational direction of the backend section over the medium to long term.

Receipt Challenge is a consumer service built around receipt submissions and purchasing data. Its data assets include large volumes of receipt OCR data, demographic information, recipe-viewing histories, location information, and in-app behavior. The service is being developed to support the digital use of offline purchasing data and to help transform workflows in the manufacturer and retail sectors.

Development is carried out in Scrum by cross-functional teams of approximately four to six people. Engineers, designers, product managers, and business development members discuss goals and work toward KPIs owned by each team. Architecture and design decisions are discussed among engineers, with reasoning documented and feedback exchanged through code and design reviews.

The named technology stack includes Ruby, Rails, Node.js, React, MySQL, Redis, Terraform, Amazon CloudWatch, New Relic, Sentry, Opsgenie, AWS services including ECS, RDS, ElastiCache, DynamoDB, SQS, S3, and Lambda, Snowflake, dbt, BigQuery, Athena, GitHub Actions, CodePipeline, and CodeBuild. The role also involves using AI in the development workflow. A 64GB-memory, 1TB-storage MacBook Pro is provided, with model replacement every two years. JIS or US keyboard layouts and 14-inch or 16-inch displays can be selected, and a 27-inch 4K monitor is available in the office.
