Data Scientist

The data scientist will use data held by JMDC and the Omron Group to create new value through data science. Responsibilities include developing new businesses and services based on data use, providing data analysis consulting and building and delivering predictive models for industries such as manufacturing and retail, improving the value of business-unit and group-company services with machine learning, and presenting work at domestic and international academic conferences and in papers.

The role works with a large medical database and other group data. The data is cleansed and managed in relational databases, allowing data scientists to focus on analysis and model development. The work also provides experience with domain knowledge across multiple industries and with developing new services that use data science.

Required qualifications are mathematical and scientific thinking, professional experience as a data scientist, and practical data analysis experience using Python and SQL. Applicants whose first language is not Japanese must have advanced business-level Japanese. Preferred experience includes developing machine-learning-based services for production, implementing machine-learning services in cloud environments such as AWS or GCP, applying data science across a broad range of industries, and analyzing unstructured data such as audio and video. The posting also seeks people who can work independently from problem definition through social implementation, communicate effectively in speech and writing, enjoy learning new things, and pursue ongoing self-development.

This is a full-time position at the Tokyo office in Minato, Tokyo. The work uses a flextime system with core hours from 11:00 to 15:00; standard working time is eight hours per day with a 60-minute break. Overtime is expected to be approximately 10 to 20 hours. Salary is not disclosed, is paid monthly, is reviewed once a year in July, and may include additional overtime pay; the final amount is determined under company rules based on experience and ability. The probation period is three months from the joining date and may be extended by up to three additional months when deemed necessary, with the same conditions.

The position includes Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays off, year-end and New Year holidays from December 29 through January 3, holidays on May 1 and 2, paid leave, and an annual option to take up to nine consecutive days off including weekends and public holidays. Benefits include health, pension, employment, and workers' compensation insurance, commuting support of up to 150,000 yen per month, a defined-contribution pension plan, parental and family-care leave, condolence payments, and an employee stock ownership plan. The mandatory retirement age is 65. The selection process consists of document screening, an initial interview or casual meeting, a second interview with a practical predictive-modeling assignment, a third interview and web aptitude test, and a final executive interview.
