Data Scientist

The data scientist will create new value from JMDC’s medical and healthcare data through data science. Responsibilities include research and development for healthcare services, such as prediction models for the progression of lifestyle-related diseases; data analysis consulting and predictive model development and delivery for insurers and healthcare companies; improving the value of services operated by business divisions and group companies through machine learning; and presenting findings at domestic and international academic conferences and in papers.

The role focuses on research and development using one of Japan’s largest medical databases. The data includes health insurance data, municipal data, electronic medical records, DPC data, dispensing and prescription claim data, medical images, wearable data, patient-reported outcomes for clinical trials, and genomic data. The posting states that the data is cleaned and managed in relational databases, allowing data scientists to concentrate on analysis and model development. The work also provides experience in healthcare and medical-domain knowledge, new service development using data science, and opportunities to improve statistical and machine-learning skills.

Required qualifications are mathematical and scientific thinking, practical experience as a data scientist, and experience analyzing data with Python and SQL. Applicants whose first language is not Japanese must have advanced business-level Japanese. Preferred experience includes developing production services using machine learning or data science, implementing machine-learning services in cloud environments such as AWS or GCP, and applying data science to a specific healthcare area, including service development or research using wearable data. Specialized biostatistics knowledge for medical research or clinical knowledge is also welcomed.

The position is based at the Tokyo office in Shibadaimon, Minato-ku, Tokyo. Employment is permanent, with a monthly salary system; compensation is determined according to company rules and experience and ability. A three-month probationary period applies and may be extended by up to three additional months when deemed necessary. Overtime is approximately 10–20 hours per month. Working hours use a flextime system with core hours from 11:00 to 15:00 and standard working time of eight hours per day. Benefits and systems include social insurance, commuting allowance up to 150,000 yen per month, a corporate defined-contribution pension, parental and nursing-care leave systems, an employee stock ownership plan, and a retirement age of 65.
