Engineering Project Manager, Global, Lead

The project manager will lead multiple projects for the development and supply of gyrotrons, advanced plasma heating systems used toward the practical application of fusion energy. Projects involve domestic and international research institutions and partner companies, and are managed from the order phase through design, manufacturing and assembly, operation and closeout.

Responsibilities cover the full project lifecycle: design, manufacturing, export, installation and commissioning. The role includes prioritizing concurrent projects, coordinating resources and schedules, tracking deadlines, preparing overall schedules, and directing and following up with relevant stakeholders. The project manager will integrate milestones, cost and quality controls so that progress and revenue recognition advance reliably at each stage.

The role also requires understanding customer requirements and concerns, building trust through dialogue and business travel, incorporating customer needs into project execution, and selecting and carrying out appropriate actions as circumstances change. The project manager will request reviews from internal specialists, organize issues and topics, coordinate and follow up on internal design reviews for deliverables, and manage the submission and organization of documents and drawings.

Additional responsibilities include arranging equipment and materials, issuing shipping instructions, and coordinating with related departments and partners during export. During on-site installation and commissioning, the role will confirm status with customers, provide necessary support, and help complete the system so that the customer can begin operation. Projects may range from several hundred million to several billion yen and may continue for several years.

Required qualifications include at least seven years of advanced project management experience, including independently advancing projects while involving multiple stakeholders and internal and external specialists and managing quality, cost and delivery. Experience handling customer requirements definition, consensus building and issue resolution is required. Advanced, fluent English is required for facilitation and communication with overseas customers. Candidates must also have a basic understanding of cooling-water systems and electrical and control equipment. Experience with engineering projects is welcomed.

Experience managing equipment, electrical or instrumentation construction in energy, heavy electrical equipment, plants, semiconductor manufacturing equipment or research and development equipment projects is preferred. Knowledge or experience in export control, customs and international logistics, experience accompanying on-site construction or commissioning, a science or engineering background, technical understanding sufficient for detailed discussion with engineers, and project management qualifications such as PMP are also welcomed.

The position is based in Ota, Tokyo, with work at the Tokyo satellite office in Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku also possible. Remote work may be discussed for people living within commuting distance. Working hours are 9:00 to 18:00 with a one-hour break; flextime may apply depending on business needs. The position is full-time, although contract employment may also be possible.
