About this role

This full-time position is in the Intellectual Property Department of the Corporate Management Headquarters, assigned to one of Sections 2 through 4. The department supports all business areas by developing and executing IP strategies, protecting development technologies, reducing imitation risk, managing third-party patent risks, handling patent litigation and licensing negotiations, and conducting IP due diligence for M&A and investment projects.

The role works closely with research and development departments to understand business and development strategies and translate them into IP issues. Responsibilities include identifying inventions in newly developed technologies, especially core technologies linked to competitiveness, and handling patent applications and prosecution. The position also conducts clearance and freedom-to-operate investigations, evaluates potential third-party patent risks, and takes preventive measures. When patent litigation or warnings arise, the employee coordinates with legal departments and external lawyers. For M&A projects, the employee works with project teams on IP due diligence, including evaluating the target company’s IP value and investigating and analyzing potential IP risks.

Applicants must have at least five years of practical IP experience at a manufacturing company. Required experience covers patent applications and prosecution, as well as patent investigations such as clearance or FTO searches, prior-art searches, invalidity-material searches, and IP landscape-related investigations. English must be sufficient for independently handling foreign patent applications and prosecution, reading English patent publications and examination documents, and communicating in English with foreign patent and law firms.

A background or IP experience in optics, precision technology, measurement, communications, image processing, signal processing, software, medical fields, or biotechnology is welcomed. Experience in patent litigation, contract negotiations, IP due diligence, or management of an organization at section-manager level or above is also welcomed. Domestic or international patent attorney or attorney-at-law qualifications are welcomed.

The work supports a broad range of Nikon Group businesses and involves global coordination, including collaboration with overseas development sites. The position can provide experience in patent work, advanced technology areas such as optics, precision, control, measurement, and image processing, as well as communication, project management, and strategic thinking. Career development may include job rotation across business and technology areas, broader IP responsibilities, leadership or management roles, continued expert practice, and overseas assignments or training.
