Backend Engineer (Tech Lead)

This position joins the Media Business Unit, Development Section, Backend Team, and works on the Kurashiru recipe product for app and web users. The product has 44 million cumulative iOS and Android installs and is used by 56 million people monthly.

In the short term, the role develops app and web features to support product growth, resolves technical issues in the backend area, promotes the use of AI in engineering, and develops new core experiences such as AI-enabled functionality. The role is expected to approach development with a product-oriented perspective and contribute to both the product and the organization that builds it.

Over the medium to long term, responsibilities include development spanning the media business and other businesses, technology strategy design, and discussions with management. The position may also take on full-stack development with frontend or infrastructure as an adjacent area, as well as management of the backend organization to support significant product growth.

The backend environment uses Ruby 3.4 and Rails 8.1, with MySQL middleware and Terraform for configuration management. Monitoring tools include Amazon CloudWatch, Datadog, and Sentry. Infrastructure includes AWS services such as ECS, RDS, ElastiCache, DynamoDB, SQS, S3, and Lambda. The frontend stack includes React, TypeScript, Jotai, react-dom/server, and Node.js.

The data and analysis environment includes Snowflake, dbt, Lightdash, Athena, and Google Analytics. CI/CD uses GitHub Actions, CodePipeline, and CodeBuild. AI-related tools and services listed for the development environment include Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Amazon Bedrock, Devin, Gemini, and NotebookLM.

Development is carried out by small teams operating a large product. Feature development uses a mixed Biz/Dev Scrum process, with two-way communication between business and development participants during Scrum events and daily development work, followed by PDCA cycles. The organization also addresses technical debt alongside feature development and promotes AI-driven development across the company.

The development organization describes a full-stack builder model in which engineers broaden their expertise from a primary area into adjacent areas such as product management, design, frontend, and backend. Product and engineering teams use behavioral data generated during cooking to support analysis and proposals.
