Engineering Manager

The Engineering Manager leads a product development team working on analysis services and web services that use large-scale health data from health insurance associations, medical institutions, and dispensing pharmacies. The products include Kenjo+ and a personal notification service for health insurance associations. The organization is advancing AI adoption and renewing its development processes.

Responsibilities include coordinating with teams and departments needed to advance projects, assigning work with consideration for business and member growth, setting and driving organizational goals with senior leaders, and managing team members through goal setting, evaluations, feedback, and one-on-ones. The role also participates in engineer recruiting, including application screening and interviews. Depending on the candidate’s interests and strengths, responsibilities may be adjusted. Writing code is possible when it does not interfere with project execution and leadership duties.

The team generally has around 5–10 members. Development priorities and schedules are coordinated through discussions with the sales and planning departments. Development is conducted in-house, without client-site assignment.

Required qualifications include the ability to communicate across organizational boundaries, involve product managers and business-side stakeholders, identify fundamental customer and business insights, and act on them. Applicants must have experience leading an engineering team of three or more people and experience independently leading project progress, including schedule management and coordination with related departments.

Preferred experience includes practical people management such as goal setting, evaluations, and one-on-ones; introducing or promoting AI-enabled or data-driven development processes; working as a product manager or project manager; and using AI, including autonomous development agents, to improve processes from specification through implementation, documentation, review, and testing. Experience selecting technologies, designing workflows, and establishing operating rules so development-team members can use AI agents effectively is also welcomed, as is experience or interest in defining and operating new engineer evaluation criteria related to agent operation and supervision.

The development environment includes Go for the backend; React and TypeScript for the web frontend; Python and dbt for data loading; AWS infrastructure; MySQL as the base; Snowflake, PostgreSQL, and Vertica databases, with migration to Snowflake planned; Auth0 for authentication; Datadog and Google Analytics for monitoring; GitHub Actions and Terraform for DevOps; and GitHub Copilot and Claude Code for AI-assisted development. Common tools include Google Meet, GitHub, Slack, JIRA, Confluence, Google Workspace, and Gemini.

This is a full-time role based at the Tokyo office in Minato-ku. Working hours use a flextime system with an 11:00–15:00 core time, an eight-hour standard workday, and a 60-minute break. The position provides a current-model MacBook Pro and a 27-inch 4K display, along with subsidies for technical books and engineering-event participation. Benefits include health, pension, employment, and workers’ compensation insurance, commuting expenses up to JPY 150,000 per month, a corporate defined-contribution pension, parental and nursing-care leave systems, condolence payments, and an employee stock ownership plan. The mandatory retirement age is 65. Regular holidays are Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, with additional year-end and New Year holidays and paid leave provisions.
