About this role

This role is based in Koto-ku, Tokyo, Japan, within the software engineering department responsible for designing, developing and operating PlayStation online services. The services include online rankings, matchmaking and trophy features, delivered through Web APIs and other forms for game companies and PlayStation system software. Game companies and players are direct users of the services.

The team supports a large online platform that has provided services worldwide for many years. It works with numerous server applications and platforms that have been operated for more than 15 years. The responsibilities include creating a sustainable service lifecycle, gradually migrating diverse services with different characteristics and operational requirements to a standardized and common platform foundation, and improving the balance among cost, operational efficiency and maintainability.

The role also involves building an environment where services can be released and operated safely, reliably and with limited manual effort. The team improves operational efficiency through automation and explores AI-based operational support and service improvements as part of actual service operations. The work combines responsibility for maintaining established large-scale services with the development of improved operating platforms and service-management processes. The team discusses technology, cost and efficiency openly and on an equal footing.

Required areas include requirements definition and system architecture design. Candidates must have experience in at least two of the following areas: development using storage or caching technologies such as MySQL, DynamoDB, Memcached or Redis; development using Web technologies such as REST API or WebSocket; development or operations in environments using virtualization technologies such as Docker; development of distributed, highly concurrent or highly available systems; parameter tuning for Web applications, storage or caches; use of public cloud services; server construction using Terraform, Chef or similar tools; use of SaaS monitoring or APM tools; automation of Ops work; and incident response, root-cause investigation and improvement.

English ability includes reading and writing with the use of AI, real-time communication through text messages in chat tools, and reading prepared English aloud without significant hesitation. Japanese must be native or business level, equivalent to Japanese Language Proficiency Test N1 or higher. The role involves frequent collaboration with overseas counterparts, regular meetings and opportunities for overseas business trips.
