About this role

This Tokyo-based reporter will join the Japan markets group and cover equities for global and local audiences. The role involves explaining market flows and analyzing trends, with coverage ranging from short blog posts and breaking news to analysis and long-form enterprise stories. Reporting should explain what is happening, why it is happening, and what it means in the context of local and global market trends.

Day-to-day work includes developing story ideas, cultivating market sources, conducting interviews, and collaborating with colleagues across the newsroom. The reporter is expected to work in a fast-paced, real-time news environment, maintain urgency and sound news judgment, and communicate across newsroom teams. A multimedia approach is required for a digital readership. The role also uses Bloomberg data and analytics to create visually appealing stories. Flexibility to cover other asset classes, including bonds and currencies, is described as an advantage.

Candidates need at least three years of experience in financial journalism, preferably with market coverage, or comparable experience in a relevant industry role. Proficiency in writing English or Japanese is required, along with the ability to conduct interviews in the local language.
